Coast Guard rescues 2 fishermen from sinking boat

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) - Two people have been rescued from a sinking fishing boat near New York's Fishers Island.

Coast Guard officials in Connecticut say the fishing crew reported their 55-foot commercial vessel started taking on significant water at around 7:30 a.m. Sunday while in the Long Island Sound.

Rescue crews from Montauk, New York and New London, Connecticut were dispatched. Officials say Coast Guard officers gave the fishing crew a dewatering pump, but it was unable to keep up with the flooding, forcing the two to abandon ship.

The boat capsized about a minute after they were taken aboard the rescue team vessel. No injuries were reported.

Officials say the boat, which they didn't identify, was returned to its homeport of Hampton Bays, New York, but ultimately sank in about 60-feet of water.
