Underground fire forces evacuation of halfway house

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Fire and power company investigators are trying to determine the cause of an underground electrical fire in Hartford that forced the evacuation of a halfway house with 38 residents. The fire was reported at about 11 p.m. Monday on Washington Street, not far from the state Capitol. The blaze sent smoke pouring out of street manholes and into the halfway house for people with criminal cases run by Community Partners in Action. No injuries were reported. Residents of the building were moved onto local transit buses temporarily. Eversource crews remained at the scene Tuesday morning. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
