Freezing rain causes crashes, school closings

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Numerous car crashes and school closings have been reported across Connecticut as freezing rain iced over roads. State police said they were responding to multiple accidents Wednesday morning. The state Department of Transportation says parts of several highways were closed because of crashes including Interstate 84 westbound in both Southbury and Willington, Route 8 northbound in Naugatuck and Route 66 in Middletown. The DOT urged people to be cautious and avoid driving if possible. Many cities and towns closed schools Wednesday, including Bridgeport, Stamford and Waterbury. Other school districts had delays of up to two hours.
