Police: Car crashes into river, driver killed

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) Police say a car crashed into the Mill River in New Haven and its driver has died.

Police say first responders arrived at the scene early Sunday after someone reported seeing a car go into the river. Police say firefighters went into the water but weren't able to free the man from the car.

Police say they believe the car went through a fence and into the water. Police say it appears at this point that it was a single car crash.

Police said the driver was a 28-year-old man who lived in Madison. His name has not yet been released.

His body has been taken to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
