9 state psychiatric hospital workers charged with cruelty

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) - Three mental-health workers at a Connecticut psychiatric hospital have been arrested in connection with allegations of patient abuse at the maximum-security facility.

The Hartford Courant reports that Carl Benjamin, Mark Cusson and Gregory Giantonio were charged Tuesday with multiple counts of cruelty to persons and disorderly conduct. Six more were charged last night.  State police say additional arrests are forthcoming.

Thirty-one employees, including two managers, at the Whiting Forensic Division at Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middletown have been suspended through the spring and summer over videos that allegedly show the abuse of an elderly patient in one of the locked wards.

The state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services said Tuesday it "finds the nature of abuse described in the allegations reprehensible."

It couldn't be determined Tuesday if the three defendants have retained attorneys.
