Release of man from jail before murder, rape spurs outrage

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - The release of a Connecticut man from jail shortly before police say he killed a nurse in New York City and sexually assaulted another woman in Los Angeles has outraged the nurse's family and frustrated prosecutors.

Police are now investigating Danueal Drayton's claims that he has killed at least five women.

A judge in Nassau (NAS'-saw) County, New York, released the New Haven man without bail on July 5 in a strangulation case involving a third woman, not knowing about Drayton's violent criminal history in Connecticut. Two weeks later, police say he killed nurse Samantha Stewart in Queens and raped the woman in Los Angeles, where he was arrested last week.

Stewart's relatives and Nassau County prosecutors believe Drayton would still be jailed on bond if the judge had known about his Connecticut rap sheet.
